Roland Rogers was awarded a total of $2300 in Atlanticare Healthy Schools New School Edible Garden Grants the last 2 years.   The Edible Garden is in the back of the school at the playground. This garden is an excellent way for experiential, sensory based learning and nutrition education. Our students are lucky to now have more opportunities to bring science, math, social studies, and language and visual arts to life through hands-on learning. We have expanded our garden to more classrooms.  More students are actively involved in caring for our vegetable garden. Our vegetable garden has 4 large raised beds.  We purchased a new shed to store all our new shovels , a hose reel hideaway and other gardening equipment. New soil was added to our garden as well.  Lettuce, tomatoes, great beans, strawberries, and peppers were planted this year.  Many of these seeds were provided to us at AltantiCare’s gardening workshop. A zoned automatic timed irrigation system was added to water the beds daily. Thank you to AtlantiCare for awarding us a grant again.  We love our new outdoor classroom which reconnects students with the natural world and the true source of their food, and teaches them valuable gardening and agriculture concepts and skills that integrate with several subjects, such as math, science, art, health and physical education, and social studies, as well as several educational goals, including personal and social responsibility. We are all very excited about the garden and how it teaches us that when we work together we can accomplish great things.  Roland Rogers is committed to growing our healthy kids program and looking forward to spending time in our continuously growing garden!
